How I Actually Use Rain Radar Now (Without Losing My Mind)
- Start with the national guys first I usually open NOAA’s radar because it feels like the most honest uncle at the family BBQ. Less clickbait than some apps.
- Then I zoom into the local NWS office radar Your local National Weather Service office usually has the cleanest, least sponsored radar view. For me right now it’s showing this nasty green/yellow blob creeping up from the southwest. ETA about 38 minutes. Pray for me.
- Cross-check with a second app because trust issues I bounce between RadarScope (paid but worth every penny if you’re a weather nerd) and the free WeatherBug radar layer. If they disagree by more than 15–20 minutes I assume the universe hates me and just stay inside.
- Look for velocity couplets (yes I’m that guy now) If you see red and green snuggling way too close on the velocity map… that’s probably rotation. Which means possible tornado. Which means I’m moving to the basement with Milo and a bag of hot cheetos.

- Dark red + purple = run. Just run.
- Bright green moving fast toward you = you have maybe 20 minutes tops
- That innocent light blue dusting? It’s lying. It will soak you in 8 minutes flat
- If the radar shows nothing but the sky is almost black… the radar is lagging. Trust your eyes and the very angry clouds.
